Coastal Yarrow is a perennial herb native throughout the northern hemisphere, appearing along shorelines, bluffs, dunes, and coastal prairies where it thrives in sun, salt spray, and wind. Its feathery, plume-like leaves form low mats of lacy green foliage, while slender stems hold clusters of small, white flowers that bloom from spring through fall. This hardy species is well-adapted to demanding coastal landscapes, providing nectar for pollinators and stability to sandy soils with its spreading rhizomes.

The species has a long history in European and North American herbal traditions, where it has been noted for its astringent and toning qualities. The plant’s botanical name, Achillea, reflects the mythic roots of yarrow, which, according to one Greek tradition, was used by the hero Achilles on the battlefield to staunch the bleeding of his comrades- thus contributing to its folkloric name of ‘soldier’s woundwort.” The flowers, leaves, and stems have all been used in herbal applications over the centuries in preparations like salves and poultices to support minor wounds and irritated skin, and also teas and tinctures, offering a gentle yet effective herb for overall support.

For coastal landscapes, Achillea millefolium brings together this rich cultural legacy with a strong ecological presence. Its tough, spreading form helps knit fragile soils together, while its bright flower heads add texture and movement to dunes and bluffs. The long-standing lore surrounding yarrow, embodying protection and endurance, pairs beautifully with the way the coastal species holds its ground against salt, wind, and shifting sands. Even its habit of bending but not breaking in strong winds contributes to its identity as a plant of resilience.
