Known by several common names (such as Silver Wormwood and Western Mugwort), Prairie Sage is a hardy, aromatic perennial growing throughout North America. Its silvery-gray foliage forms dense, upright clumps that create soft, textured mounds, while tall stalks of small yellow flowers in late summer attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The leaves release a subtle, musky sage fragrance when brushed, offering both visual and aromatic appeal in gardens and landscapes.

Distinct from true White Sage, which is native to California deserts and has a stronger, resinous aroma, Prairie Sage has historically been valued by Indigenous peoples for medicinal, culinary, and ceremonial uses. Leaves were used in cleansing rituals, teas, and topical applications, reflecting respect for the plant’s protective and healing qualities. Hardy, drought-tolerant, and low-maintenance, it grows best in full sun and adapts well in poor soils, making it ideal for xeriscaping, prairie restoration, and native plant gardens. With silvery foliage, a subtle fragrance, and ecological benefits, Prairie Sage is both a practical and attractive addition to any landscape.
