Malcolm Wells' fourth book about underground architecture will show you that building a house underground is not only possible but also a very good idea for those who want a friendly-with-the-earth life.

This book covers everything you need to know about underground building, from concept basics to house plans you can use for your own underground home.

An architect by trade, Wells lived in The Underground Art Gallery in Brewster, Mass., and wrote several books about this subject, which he began promoting in 1964. A pioneer of underground building and natural design, he penned the best-selling books Gentle Architecture and The Earth-Sheltered House. How to Build an Underground House is scanned from his handwritten and illustrated pages and self-published.

Underground build disappointment

I was highly disappointed, I have been an avid reader of Mother Earth News since it's inception and have found their information valuable over the years, but I was disappointed with this book. I am a retired Building code official and purchased this book to glean it for information. I found little information of value to aid in correctly building an underground dwelling. I found the book would be better classified as a conceptual introduction to underground living instead of a how to book on the construction of an underground house. I would have not purchased the book if I had any knowledge that it was merely throwing out concepts and contained little items of value such as sill plate to foundation sealing, sealing, waterproofing, and backfill of French drain systems, and sealing roof systems and load bearing beam sizes... this book is just about simple concepts and an overview. not a how to build.

Hi Clifford, thank you so much for taking the time to share this feedback. We're so sorry this title wasn't all you expected. If interested in returning for a refund, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at customerservice@motherearthnews.com. Thank you again and we hope to see you on another future order.
