Epazote, often called Mexican Tea, holds a revered place in traditional South American cuisine.
With its strong, aromatic fragrance and distinct flavor, this herb is a must-have in authentic Mexican and Latin American dishes for its ability to add a unique, pungent depth to beans, moles, and salsas. Its jagged, dark green leaves release a sharp scent that’s as bold as its culinary character, while its small, inconspicuous flowers bloom in clusters, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies.

The flavor of Epazote is often described as a cross between mint, oregano, and a hint of citrus, making it a versatile addition to savory dishes. Epazote is thought to help with digestion and reduce bloating, particularly in bean dishes, and has been valued in folk medicine for its many digestive benefits. It’s also known for its use in natural pest control, with its strong scent acting as a deterrent to various pests in the garden, making it a valuable companion plant.

In the garden, Epazote thrives in warm, sunny environments and is relatively easy to grow. It has a spreading habit, often reaching 2 to 3 feet in height, and can become somewhat weedy if not managed. However, its aromatic leaves and hardiness make it a practical herb to have on hand, and with its strong presence in both the kitchen and the garden, Epazote remains a timeless herb that continues to connect modern cooks to the ancient traditions of the Americas.

*While the essential oil of Epazote can be toxic in large amounts, the leaves are generally considered safe to consume in typical culinary quantities. However, it is important to avoid excessive use.
