Physalis pruinosa

Ground cherries produce prolific fruits with a tart, fruity and tangy flavor. Papery husks surround the fruits, similar to tomatillos. Unlike tomatoes, ground cherries are drought tolerant, thrive in poor soils, and do not need finicky care. Culinary opportunities abound: Cook into jams, pies, and tarts, chop fresh into salsas, toss on salads, and dry like raisins. Aunt Molly's heirloom are a time-tested favorite with fruits ripening to bright yellow.

Planting Instructions: Start Aunt Molly's Ground Cherry seeds indoors under lights 6 weeks before last spring frost. Transplant after all danger of frost has passed, spaced 2-3' apart. Sprawling habit.

Seed Saving Instructions: Remove seeds from the tastiest, fully mature fruit. Or use a blender with a very low setting-- place fruits with plenty of water and slowly blend. Strain out seeds. Dry seeds on a screen or cloth. Store seeds in a paper or mesh bag in a cool, dark and dry location.
