Are you a mountain or short-season gardener? Alaska tomato is an heirloom determinate from Russia (Aljaska in Russian) adapted to cold weather and a short growing window. Abundant, round, bright red 1-3 inch cherry tomatoes grow on shorter bushes. You won't need tall cages or supports for this tomato. The taste is mild and sweet. Grown by Groundwork in Paonia, CO.

Planting Instructions: Start Alaska Tomato seeds indoors under grow lights or in a greenhouse 6-10 weeks before last frost. Transplant 2+ weeks after last frost when soil has warmed a bit. Space plants at least 4 feet apart. Support growth with tomato cages, a trellis or wire. Water regularly but avoid overwatering (soil should be moist but not wet).

Seed Saving Instructions: When fully ripe, pick your tastiest fruits from the most vigorous plants. Cut open and squeeze Alaska Tomato seeds and juice into a jar. Secure a cloth over the jar so air can enter. Ferment the juice and seeds in the jar for 2-3 days. Then strain and rinse the seeds. Dry on a screen or cloth. Store seeds in a paper or mesh bag in a cool, dark and dry location.
